Baltimore Alumnae Sponsors “Sip N’ Stroll”

The Baltimore Alumnae Chapter (BAC) Collegiate Connection Transition Committee (CCT) held its 2nd Annual Sip N’ Stroll event on April 21, 2022. A subcommittee was responsible for planning and communicating with the collegiate chapters for a successful event. Referencing the Collegiate Connection Handbook, the committee recognized the importance of offering events that assist with increasing the rate of collegiate members transitioning to alumnae chapters.

This event was organized  as a fun way for collegiate sorors to mix and mingle with alumnae sorors. The Sip N’ Stroll was held at the Delta Community Center in the Park Heights Community of Baltimore, MD. During the event, the chapter provided refreshments and fellowship. Collegiate and alumnae sorors enjoyed teaching each other strolls and songs. Discussions were incorporated to review the  process of transitioning into an alumnae chapter.

Soror Asiah Siler, Member of Alpha Gamma Chapter stated, “I had a great time meeting and mingling with other Sorors. It was also very refreshing to learn different strolls/circle steps from local Maryland chapters of DST. I would certainly attend again and encourage more Sorors to do the same.”

The chapter targeted the collegiate chapters in its service area using Save-The-Dates, flyers, and email communication. Participating collegiate chapters included Alpha Gamma, Morgan State University and Zeta Epsilon, Coppin State University. Formerly held during the month of February, changing the event date to April gave collegiate sorors an opportunity to relax and unwind before the stress of final exams. The informal atmosphere provided collegiates an opportunity to interact and experience alumni sorors outside of business meetings. Creation of an intimate space made room for “real” conversations where questions, concerns, fears, and the uncertainties of transitioning from the collegiate level to the alumni level  were comfortably addressed.

“The Sip N’ Stroll was a great time for fellowship with my collegiate sorors and the sorors from the alumnae chapter,” said Khala Cameron, Member of Zeta Epsilon Chapter.

The chapter also provided the collegiates with tokens of appreciation and gratitude. New or gently used Delta paraphernalia items were collected from committee members and chapter sorors. Alumnae members strategically displayed all items, and at the end of the event, the collegiates were able to select the paraphernalia of their choice. Items shared included hats, scarves, shirts, journals, picture frames, and pens. Once the collegiates were through, alumnae sorors were given the opportunity to select items.

This event provided a wonderful opportunity for CCT of BAC to collectively work with Dolls, Divas, and Dears while helping our collegiates to establish connections and continue their Delta journeys. The chapter evaluated the success of this program via a survey. The evaluation indicated 100% of participants enjoyed the event and were enthusiastic for having the opportunity to be engaged with the alumnae chapter.
