Brooklyn Alumnae Salutes Its DEARS

Submitted by Nicole Duncan-Smith

In the 2022-2023 sorority year, the Brooklyn Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. launched its Delta Dears committee, an effort dedicated to inspiring, empowering, and engaging the women wisest of our sororal community. Check out how they exemplified Service, Sisterhood, and Scholarship all year round.

Delta Dears were engaged in community service, leading several projects for the chapter.

Because New York became a hub for asylum seekers, the Dears lifted the jewel of compassion and partnered with the Ladies of Zeta Phi Beta to pack donated clothes for the vulnerable and marginalized group.

They also served with the Community Service Committee to pack essential toiletries and items for men and women in shelters. Several of the Dears also volunteered at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Fellowship is very important to the chapter’s Dears. Over the last 10 months, dressed in crimson and cream, they attended The View and The Tamron Hall Shows. And because ain’t no party like a “Delta Dear” party, the queens of our chapter hosted five luncheons for 1) the Chinese New Year, 2) GAL-entine’s Day, 3) Cinco De Mayo, and 4) Juneteenth. The Committee also instituted its Fifth Annual Delta Dear Luncheon that allowed the sorors to dress up in their best and share their journey in the best sorority in the world.

Several committees have benefited from the intentional presence of our Dears.

The Social Action Committee was assisted by Dears volunteering at the Black, Puerto Rican, and Asian Caucus in the state’s capital, Albany, NY. They also came out in droves to the Brooklyn Alumnae Day at TAMA, Delta Days in Brooklyn, Delta Days at the United Nations, and Delta Days in the Nation’s Capital.

Dears, who have successfully managed their own properties and businesses, lent their skill sets to the Economic Development Committee, assisting in the coordination of a re-entry workshop for female ex-offenders desiring to pivot into entrepreneurship. Likewise, they partnered with the Mental & Physical Health Committee to secure and monitor a mammogram bus in collaboration with Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church Health Committee.

No one knows that membership is a lifetime commitment more than the sorority’s Dears. That is why they participated in reclaiming three Dears as financial members at an official event. While only three have joined the chapter, 10 missing Dears have re-emerged after years of being disconnected from the chapter and have participated in many of our activities.

One area, the chapter is especially proud of their Delta Dears and Golden Delta Dears is their participation in Technology 101 workshops in collaboration with Digital Girl Inc. Dears have done everything from documenting their experiences to learning new ways to engage, such as using social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok.

This blossoming committee ripe with knowledge and wisdom, still believes in the mission of our founders, dedicating their lives to those ideals. #OhToBeADeltaGirl!
