Chester Alumnae Shifts Focus to Heart Health

Submitted by Abigail King

Chester Alumnae Chapter (PA) of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. sponsored a virtual program planning event focusing on HEART HEALTH.

Sorors had a time on Feb. 17, 2024, during our AFROBEATS FITNESS Event, when 23-45 aged individuals participated in ther Physical Health program.

Individuals took part in a fun-filled hour, moving and learning the impact of heart health on women.

The primary focus was to educate our community on the importance of heart health in the black community. The chapter also emphasized the importance of an annual check-up, indicating it helps to identify underlying health concerns.

The participants were encouraged to create a healthy lifestyle, and the importance of moving 30 minutes a day was highlighted. What they learned was tested through a game of Khaoot, and they also had the opportunity to dance with the guest instructor.

The participants completed a survey to let the chapter know what they learned and to get a consensus on other fitness events they would like to see in the community. At the end of the event, participants discussed what they learned regarding health warning signs, heart health, and signs of a stroke.

An important fact that was accentuated during the event was dying due to a heart condition is at a higher rate than all cancers combined. Heart health is still the leading killer in the U.S.
