“Financial Fortitude is encompassed in the biennial charge to move Forward with Fortitude because by aiding in the development of the financial health of our communities, we are establishing a foundation that will make way for sustaining even stronger ones,” said International President and Chair of the Board of Directors, Elsie Cooke-Holmes. Estate Planning is one of the ten components in financial fortitude initiatives. According to, only 29% of African-American adults have a will established.

Chester (PA) Alumnae Chapter understands the importance of educating the community and established a three-hour workshop on Dec. 9, 2023. Participants were educated on the impacts of not having an estate plan, legal documents needed to prepare, benefits of a Trust, what is involved in the probate process, how to protect your assets against the high cost of long-term care, divorce, creditors, taxes, and other threats and how to qualify for Medicaid assistance to pay for nursing home care without losing your life savings.

Participants heard real testimonies, along with the fact-driven information that would make them understand the importance of estate planning to show the importance of making it a priority in their lives. Each participant was given a survey that reviewed the presenters’ overall effectiveness and the material’s value. Clearly, the presentation influenced all the participants as results indicated 100% of the survey completed, indicating they would move forward with creating their own estate plan. News of the event was shared by word of mouth, multiple social media (Facebook, Instagram, Chapter website) platforms, and various news outlets.
