Emergency Response Team – Co-Chairs: Leslie Fletcher, Sabrina Feggins
For the fourth consecutive year, the Emergency Response Team of the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter has presented a fire prevention and safety workshop for the general community. Philadelphia Alumnae chapter members, and Sorors from other chapters in the five-county area also attended. For the third year, ERT successfully partnered with the General Kearny Elementary school, and many parents and students from the school were among the more than 52 people who attended the November 10, 2021 event. For the second year, the workshop was presented through the Zoom platform.
This year’s workshop featured a presentation by Tyrone Davis, an active Philadelphia Fire Department Fire Fighter. Mr. Davis shared vital, comprehensive, and timely information on topics such as:
- How to safely use a space heater and where to place it
- The use of extension cords and surge protectors
- The protocol when burning candles in your home
- The importance of having and practicing a fire escape plan
- The need to have working smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide detector
Mr. Davis also performed a virtual demonstration on how to properly use a fire extinguisher. Finally, he interacted with the attendees in a robust question and answer session.
The attendees were then treated to a fun and high energy raffle of thematic giveaway items that included fire extinguishers and smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. There were seven winners. The feedback from attendees was very positive. Many of them had attended the event in previous years and were supportive of the 4th annual workshop. Attendees indicated that they learned new things and look forward to next year’s workshop.
