On Dec. 1, 2023, the Morristown Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated proudly hosted a virtual webinar in celebration of World AIDS Day. The event aimed to raise awareness, foster community engagement and commemorate the lives affected by HIV/AIDS.
This year marked the 35th observance of World Aids Day and the theme was “Let Community Lead.” At the heart of the webinar was Connie Johnson, a distinguished author and community advocate known for her impactful work in the field of HIV/AIDS awareness.
Johnson’s personal experiences and dedication to the cause have made her a powerful voice in advocating for those affected by the virus. During the webinar, Johnson shared her journey as an HIV positive woman, while also highlighting the challenges faced by individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
She detailed how, as part of a graduate program, she traveled to Kenya where she met several amazing and courageous women. This trip would have a lasting impact on her and be the inspiration for her first book – “Beyond Measure.” This book introduced the world to 10 Kenyan women, how they were brought together and how their lives were forever changed by their connection to an organization – Living Positive Kenya. Johnson pledged that part of the proceeds from the sale of Beyond Measure would be donated to Living Positive Kenya
The presentation concluded with a Q&A, and feedback received detailed the educational and emotional impact of the webinar. Participants left the event with a heightened awareness of the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.
Morristown Alumnae recognizes the significance of addressing health disparities and empowering communities through education. By organizing events like the virtual webinar, Morristown Alumnae continues to be a catalyst for positive change in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
