Philadelphia Alumnae celebrates City’s Best

On Feb. 26, 2024 Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) honored Soror Lurline Jones and four other Black community activists during his 18th Annual Black History Month program, held at the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. Supported by Madame President Dr. Penny Sparks Nixon, Second Vice President Lynne Battle Millard, Corresponding Secretary Kimberly Qinn, and other members of the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter, the program “Voices Empowering Generational Change,” highlighted Soror Jones’ 52-year coaching career with the School District of Philadelphia.

Joined by Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives Joanna McClinton who also gave remarks, Senator Casey described Soror Jones, and her fellow honorees, as citizens representing “…the very best of Pennsylvania.” A room filled with family, friends, colleagues, community members, city representatives, and state officials, he went on to exclaim that the work of these trailblazers and their gifts to uplift generations “…will leave a lasting impact on our Commonwealth.”

In addition to receiving recognition for their service, the honorees engaged in a guided panel discussion sharing pivotal moments in their careers, their motivation for service, and lessons learned along the journey. For Soror Jones, this included words of wisdom taught by her mother, an acknowledgement of the more than 300 students she helped earn collegiate athletic scholarships, with three making it to the WNBA, and the many ways she continues to serve the Philadelphia community by speaking on issues of gun violence, financial literacy, and overarching ways to continue to engage young people through sports. The evening concluded with pictures and a lightfare reception.

A phenomenal affair beautifully highlighting the steadfast commitment and servant leadership of Black activists throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter congratulates Soror Lurline Jones on this great honor and proudly celebrates her as a hero among us!
