Tri-County (MD) Alumnae Goes International

Submitted by Dina Porter-McKenzie

On May 6, 2023, the Tri-County (MD) Alumnae Chapter (TCMDAC) International Awareness and Involvement (IAI) Committee hosted a group of sorors who signed up to attend the “Around the World Embassy Tour” in Washington, DC. Participants of this open house event were able to travel the world as they experienced food, art, dance, fashion, music, innovations, and manufactured goods from different countries.

More than 60 embassies opened their doors to visitors. This annual event attracts large crowds and long lines of visitors all anxiously awaiting embassy doors to open. Each individual country uniquely fascinated the crowds by highlighting what makes their country special, their culture and traditions.

The group of 13 TCMDAC members set the goal to divide into three separate groups to maximize their chances of gaining entrance into a few of the embassies. The primary focus was to visit the embassies of the countries that Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated continuously supports through its International Sustainability Plan, which consists of Haiti, Kenya, and South Africa.

Collectively, the groups were able to visit eight embassies: Haiti, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Bahamas, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Kenya, and Rwanda. The International Awareness and Involvement Committee also created a few trivia questions for the groups to answer while visiting the embassies. Each group received different geography-related trivia questions about certain countries that participated in the open house. Once the questions were answered, the group members were expected to visit that specific country and obtain a stamp in their souvenir passport books. The group that managed to answer all their questions correctly, received an international prize from the IAI committee.

Sorors ended the afternoon with a fellowship meal at the Madhatter Restaurant in Washington, DC’s Dupont Circle neighborhood.  It was an amazing day full of fun, culture, sisterhood, and great memories. This is the first of many embassy-related events that the IAI Committee will be hosting for chapter members.
